Character Information
Character Name: (Most commonly known as) AmberCharacter Series: Darker than Black
Character Age: GOOD QUESTION, the canon never states this. She appears to be about early 20s in her first chronological appearance and it's never mentioned if she used her power before that. Since the main series occurs five years later, let's roll with chronologically mid-late 20s to early 30s. Physically, in her longest appearance in the anime, she is about 15-16.
Character Gender: Female
Original Canon
Canon Point: Post-Anime, Season 1.
Background Link: Delicious wikia link.
Personality:
Amber is a "contractor", a being with supernatural powers. In exchange for her human emotions and an obligation to repay for the usage of her power, Amber obtained the power of Chronokinesis. In the world of Darker than Black, there is a rumour that contractors cannot feel emotion. However, Amber's actions seemingly go against what is said. She should not technically feel love, anger, or sadness, but she displays all of these emotions. Later, Amber ascribes her emotions to the evolution of the Contractors and humans race as a whole through time.
The first impression one would feel when encountering Amber would most likely be mysterious. Although her emotions are real, she still carries an air of knowing a lot more than she divulges. Often times, Amber does not dispense critical information until it is absolutely necessary. Amber can be sad, happy, and upset, although all of these behaviours are much more subtle than the most composed of humans. In contrast to most, her emotions are subdued. Unless one knew her well, her emotions would be largely unnoticeable outside of the cheerful composure she always displays when talking to others. One only really senses her irritation or seriousness towards the end of the series, when Amber is insisting that Hei do as she told her to. Even this, however, is said in a light manner. In her outward appearance, Amber is teasing and playful, joking around with one of her former allies (that she betrayed) in a way that would make more sense between old friends. She appears to not take anything seriously and acts very carefree. Sometimes her actions can seem a little erratic (buying an umbrella when it's bright and sunny), but when one takes into consideration that she can see the future, it doesn't seem so strange (she would later get splashed on when someone was emptying their bucket were it not from the umbrella she purchased earlier).
Amber is a social darwinist who genuinely believes that the new race of contractors will come to dominate the world (in a very Magneto fashion). She calls for the public acceptance of contractors where they have previously remained a governmental secret. In doing so, she does not hesitate to orchestrate terrorist acts in order to receive recognition. Outside of terrorism, she tasks her allies with finding and recruiting other contractors to accomplish her goals under the name of "Evening Primrose". She enjoys educating others to the existence of contractors or bringing them into her organization and dedicates herself to prevent a mysterious "Syndicate" from killing off all her allies, the contractors.
Aided by her clairvoyance, Amber knows the fate of the people around her, such as when they will die. Obviously, this is a fact that she does not like to reveal to most people if these acts will cause her plans to go astray. In this way, she is manipulative and secretive. However, her manipulation is warm, and not entirely free from bonds that she has with her followers and supporters. Amber isn't cold, and she does not throw lives on the line unless she sees them as absolutely necessary. For example, one of her supporters, a young boy named Maki, goes ballistic and rogue when he learns that Amber likes someone other than himself. Although Amber knew that this would happen, previous to this encounter, Amber would try to make his life more comfortable because she would not be around all the time. She would dote on him and tell him to study his lessons, along with giving him a charm that told him to "protect his smile" as well as putting him in the care of someone who could take care of him. She does not cry at his death, nor does she appear to feel anything after he dies. Amber does not feel anything because she already knows that he would die at that point. On the other hand, she purposely intervened with one of her followers, Amagiri, when he was about to be burned to death, Amber managed to send him a message telling him where the enemy was. This act demonstrates that Amber is not a stone cold manipulator, but rather "manipulates" people only when it is necessary.
Amber is an old acquaintance of the protagonist, Hei. Amber's relationship with Hei is her strongest relationship by far. It would be completely fair to say that Amber is in love with him (although it may not be reciprocated). She does a lot for him, such as not telling him about the mysterious Syndicate he works for so he may keep himself alive. She does not tell him where his sister is and strings him along with the words "Do you want to see her," to keep him going so he will not simply give up. She cares a lot for Hei, going so far as to sacrificing herself so that Hei may pursue a path that was not originally offered. As stated by one character in the ending, she is reluctant to do so because she does not want to let him go. In the end, however, Amber is completely willing to sacrificing herself by rewinding time(thus becoming unborn) so he may make the decision to keep the coexistence of humans and contractors.
Abilities:
- Chronokinesis: Amber's ability as a 'Contractor' is chronal manipulation. She can freeze and rewind time to a unknown degree (although any usage of it will activate her obeisance). She also possesses Clairvoyance and stemming from her clairvoyance, knowledge of the details of the future. Once time has been frozen around her, she can also pull other people out of the frozen time stream before time resumes. As part of her repayment ("Obeisance"), Amber ages backwards. It is never mentioned how many years, but judging from how she jumped from a teenager to a child, a good estimate would be around 10 years.
( At some point I'd like to get this cleared up with the mods such as how she may use her powers and not get unborn!)
Sample Entry:
Amber knows.
She knows everything, knows the future, knows his future so different from the rest, and the fate of the world around her as it churns into the Solar Maxim. Yet such knowledge does not stop her. It was the opposite, such knowledge led to the attempt to avert what was dangerous and threatening to their cause. The world humans know is slowly coming to an end, and she does not need to do anything at all. For now, she watches from her secretive places, wishing to not be discovered. Amber already knows; it is impossible. The Syndicate, MI-6, everyone else, they will never find her. She cannot be found unless she wishes it.
Her hand is gently nestled against the large billboard behind her, and her eyes are focused against a small figure running between the alleys in the dusk Tokyo skyline. A soft smile, the one that she always wore, rests on her face. She does not say anything, and she does not move, only observing the black clad figure running in the distance before he vanishes completely out of sight with a swing of his grappling hook and wire. He had not the thought to turn to her even once, and she giggles lightly, before moving into the descend to the base of the building. There are things to be done, and she cannot be caught watching him like this, nor does she want to be here when the bomb goes off.
Pieces of building scatter violently as soon as she exits from the first floor, blown apart by a carefully planted explosive. It will catch the attention of many, just like it was supposed to. By the time he turns his head to investigate the collapsing, she is already making her way to the meeting point, where other members of Evening Primrose away. Amber turns her head to the falling building, and her smile never waivers. This is only step one. She giggles, again.
"I'm sorry, Hei," She mumbles to the embassy, watching helicopters swarm around the fire, "It's not time for us to meet just yet, but soon, I promise."
For a moment, her gaze remains on the burning building. Amber's smile has dropped into a more pensive look, and her lips only remain slightly raised in the corners. It is not enough for it to be a complete smile. Was he looking at what she had done from somewhere else? Surely he must have been, everyone in Tokyo must have been looking at it. She turns on her heels, folding her hands behind her back, and decides to linger no longer.
"Amagiri should be almost done on his side as well."
A boy greets her on her way to the meeting point, and she pleasantly responds, holding out her hand for him to take. they do not say anything to the exchange. She gives his hand a light squeeze and simply walks. The heterochromic boy does not say much, and Amber does not prompt him to say anything he doesn't want to. The alley they take is silent, but the city behind them is loud and whirring as the news of the bombing finally reaches public ears. Mission accomplished.
